Last week during Game 5 of the WNBA finals the LA Sparks defeated the Minnesota Lynx in dramatic fashion to capture the 2016 WNBA Championship. I usually don’t have a preference as to who I want win, as I would rather see a long series filled with good basketball. However, this time around deep down inside, I wanted LA to take it home.

Despite being the same age, I’ve always been a fan of Candace Parker since her days at Tennessee. I admire her love for the game, competitive spirit, versatility on the court, and the fact that she’s a mother all while being one bad ass basketball player. Earlier this year when Parker was cut from the Olympic team that would go on to win a gold medal in Rio, my heart dropped. In my own humble opinion, there was no way Parker should’ve been left of this year’s Olympic team and falling short of reaching her third god medal.

 Parker’s teammate Nneka Ogwumike also fell short of making the Olympic team, which some also say stirred controversy in her own right. But that’s just how life goes sometimes. You may work your ass off, be the best person for the part, deserve the job, and for whatever reason still get cut. You’re not always going to get the things you want and or deserve, but that’s just a part of life.

 Both Parker and Ogwumike are prime examples of perseverance and trusting God's plan, because HE always follows through. They could’ve easily felt sorry for themselves for not making the Olympic team, complained and went looking for sympathy. Instead, during the month long Olympic break they regrouped, refocused, went to work, and came back better than ever.

Just months after the disappointments of being cut from the Olympic Team, Nneka Ogwumike was named the 2016 WNBA MVP. And after 8 years in the league, Candace Parker finally got her first championship, and was named Finals MVP.

Sometimes it’s hard to fully understand what God’s plan is for us. That’s why it’s always important to remain faithful to Him because HIS plan never fails. So many times in life there is something you may want more than anything and God takes it away. To test you and your faithfulness to Him and HIS plan for you. But in doing so, going through the trials and tribulations He puts you through, the reward is always greater and means so much more.

Don't give up or get discouraged if you do not get what you feel you deserve. Continue to trust God and know that HE will always come through to those who honor their faithfulness to Him.

8 Tips To Help You Refocus On Your Goals

I’ll be the first one to admit it that in terms of this blog I’ve been more than lacking lately. I’ve been filling my mind with excuse after excuse to justify why I haven’t been able to update. I’m tired, I’m busy, I don’t have time, I’ll do it later, just to name a few. I’m human just like everyone else and I realize at times I easily find myself distracted from my goals. As the past month went by and I saw my lack of content on this blog finally understood that I need to change some things to get back on track. After a week reflecting and regrouping, I thought I would share with you what I learned.

1.     GOD—Spend some quality time with HIM. During my awful hiatus and lack of inspiration the past few weeks, the first thing I noticed when took some time to reflect was how little time I was giving to my lord and savior Jesus Christ. I know for me personally, I can tell a huge difference in my mood, energy, productivity, and everything else when I make time to spend with God alone reading my bible in the word. If you haven’t done this lately and you feel yourself slacking, I highly suggest taking sometime growing closer to Him.

2.     MUSIC—I don’t know about you but I personally feel like there is a playlist for every mood. There is honestly nothing that music can’t help cure just a little bit. Whenever I start to feel myself getting off course, one of the first things I do is turn to my Dream Live Ball playlist on Spotify filled with songs that push, inspire, and motivate me. If you don’t already, I highly recommend making a playlist of songs to that do the same for you to help you when you’re in a funk. 

3.     ENVIRONMENT—Believe it or not, your everyday environment and surroundings have a huge impact on what you think, feel, and produce. I’m currently sitting here in the local library writing this and I’ve never felt more refreshed. Sometimes it helps sparks your creativity to get out of what feels comfortable and work in a new location. As much as I love my room, lately I haven’t been able to get any work done there, so today I set out to go somewhere new, came across the library and in only three hours I feel like I have already accomplished so much.

4.     ROUTINE—Change your routine. There’s a reason you’ve been a funk lately so continuing to do the same thing each day won’t help you break the cycle and get out of it. Switch things up a little bit and find something new that works. Wake up earlier, change your diet, take lunch a different time, workout, switch up your routine after work. Find the time and place where you are most productive, and commit to working then.

5.     SOCAL MEDIA—Ditch it for a while. As much as I love twitter, snap, and the gram, we all know that constantly having the urge to tap, swipe, and repost, it can take up a lot of our precious time when we could be getting sh*t done. Log off for a while and put your time and effort into hard work and not the aesthetic of your Instagram feed.

6.     GO BACK—Go back when you last felt your goals where on track. One of the main reasons I enjoy to journal and film videos is to always have it as a reference to know how I was once feeling. So do the same, go back to when things were good and remember how it all last felt when you were in your groove. Use those good vibes to guide you, get back on track and get ahold of your goals.

7.     GOALS—Reevaluate them. Sometimes life can get so hectic it easy to lose sight and focus of our goals. Check in on them, write them down, and make sure you’re taking steps towards them, not backwards.

8.     REST—The main thing is, if you feel yourself getting tired from the everyday pressures of life. Learn to rest, not quit. Sometimes it’s only natural to need a break, to give your mind, body, and soul a break for the work. Learn to rest, not quit and always come back refreshed and ready to work every harder!!!

All Summer Sixteen

At the beginning of the summer I had huge hopes for summer sixteen and all that it would bring. It went so far as to outlining a very detailed summer bucket list with over 20 things that I wanted to accomplish before it was all said and done. Well it’s now Labor Day Weekend, which means the summer is basically over and I have only completed a pathetic two items from the bucket list. It’s only natural to think that because I only did two of the many things I set out to do that my summer was a complete fail! Oddly enough, it feels like the exact opposite as I truly feel like I had one of the best summers of my life.

Like I said before in my previous blog “Just Do It,” I’m learning to live more, plan less, and just go with the natural flow of where life can take you. Having a plan is good, but it’s nearly impossible to have a pre-determined list of activities waking up every morning like, hey what’s on the list today? Instead, why not wake up and do what you feel. Because it’s when we do that that the best things happen, unexpectedly.   

I had one of the best summer's I've had in a long time, and it wasn't because of a bucket list.

Without any true plans this summer, other than a failed bucket list I wasn’t expecting toomuch. I needed up making trips to Chicago, Atlanta, Kansas, Oklahoma, San Antonio and Dallas! I’d say that’s some pretty awesome traveling and trips, especially when you weren’t expecting any. At the end of June at the last minute, I decided to pile in my car and make the 9-hour drive through the wheat fields of Kansas to attend my family reunion in Kansas City. The drive itself was more than long to make solo twice in a weekend, but sometimes a road trip to yourself down the highway on your own time can be one of the most relaxing things ever!

A week later I went to Chicago for about 36 hours 12 hours before I even knew I was going. It was the most spontaneous thing ever getting a call Sunday at 6pm to book the first flight out to Chicago Monday morning, it was crazy and so much fun. After Chicago, a few weeks later towards the end of July, I went to Atlanta for a week also for work. It was a blast to be back in the city where I went to college and see my old school and an added bonus spending my day off with some of my favorite girls I coached while I was at Berry.

 

After Atlanta, I went straight home to Dallas where I spent almost two weeks at home with my family. During that time, I took two trips with my mom. One day we drove about 2 hours north the Winstar Casino in Oklahoma, and then 4 hours south to San Antonio. #GirlsTrip we had so much fun shopping, gambling (lol), and hanging out on the River Walk.

One of the coolest things I did this summer that was more than unexpected was getting a new car!!! I had been thinking about getting a new car for a few months, but I definitely did not think it was going to be possible so soon. After I drove back from Kansas, my KIA just wasn't cutting it anymore and was basically about to die. A few days later, I was blessed with Serena :) a brand new 2016 Toyota Corolla.

Of course, a summer for me wouldn't be a summer if the majority of my time wasn't spent in the gym. June was all about summer camps and as usual, I had so much fun connecting with our campers. Shortly after camp, I started doing personal training with Lily a local 7th grader in Denver. Since then, we have worked out together so much and I can't even begin to explain how much more confident she has gotten in her game. Reflecting back to our first session, I no longer know the shy girl that struggled to main ten layups. Instead, I look forward to working out with the girl who can make 25 plus layups in a row!!!

So take it from me, you don't always need to make some huge list to accomplish things in life. Looking back on my summer, I feel like I did so many cool and fun things without even knowing. I went on a few trips, saw my friends, family, and did what I love in the process. I'm super thankful for being able to have one amazing summer and now I'm even more excited for the start of basketball season and everything that will come with it.

Don't always feel like you need a list to guide you through life, you'll be surprised at things you can accomplish if you wake up everyday and LIVE. But for those who were wondering about which two items I did check of the bucket list, tye-dye and go on a road trip:)

Just Do It.

Sometimes you just have to do it, without a plan, rhyme, or any reason. Now coming from me, someone who continually goes through life with plan A, a backup plan, a fallback plan, and the worst-case scenario plan, you can tell why “just doing it,” makes me more than nervous. Honestly though I feel like sometimes life is about not having the perfect detailed plan and just reacting to your instincts and relying on your faith. Doing something for the simple reason that you love it and it makes you happy. 

The older get the more I learn that you will never be able to plan every detail and every aspect of your life. However, instead I’ve learned you have to be able to adapt to what life throws your way, and it’s in those exact moments a person discovers who they truly are. I believe that the best days and most memorable moments of life are those that go unplanned and happen unexpectedly. When life takes over and you just live it and learn how to go with the flow.

Now with that being said, I’m totally NOT saying you should live recklessly and just do whatever. What am I saying, is that sometimes you just have to jump…towards your goals, towards your dreams and just do it! A lot of times I find myself waiting and waiting for the perfect moment to “start today.” Like one day I will just wake up with a text message from God saying “Brittany today is the day.” If only this thing called life were that easy.

Basically what I’m trying to say is, there will never be the perfect magical moment we all hope for to try something new, make a change in our life, or start living your dream. That’s why every day you have to get better and you have to do more. Achieving your goal isn’t something that just one day happens, It’s a long process that happens over time.

That’s why sometimes, it is what it is and you just have to do it. Take a chance and just do it because you love it and it makes you happy. Don’t let the fear of “what it,” stop you from doing what you love. If you continue to what for the perfect time to start, you’re going to be waiting your entire life so you might as well start today!
